January is a cozy time for winter crafts. Quilting, crochet, embroidery, sewing, or knitting are all needle crafts that are easy to pick up and work on during the long, winter evenings. I learned to knit a year ago on New Year's Day. We were spending time with family friends, and Christy, the twenty-year-old young woman who was dating our friend's son was busy knitting scarves. Although I had attemped to learn knitting in my youth, I'd given up in a frustrated tangle of threads and knots! But Christy made it look so easy and soon had me knitting to my hearts content. So, on New Year's Day this year, I set out my knitting basket and have been working on a quirky scarf. The yarn actually consists of three different threads with long tassles of gold, black, brown, and cream attached. The knitted result is a scarf with tassles of color giving it a loose, tangled appearance all over. It will look nice with my black velveteen jacket and the process will be relaxing on these days of early sunsets.
How cute. I have yet to work with any of that "fun" yarn that is so popular. It seems to work up so cute. Knitting is one of my favorite passtimes. But I still need to finish my second pair of socks before I try something new : )
