Cheerful Color

My mother never liked the color yellow. As a child, I never remember any yellow home decor or mother in a yellow dress. She wouldn't even plant yellow flowers in her flower garden. As a result, my opinion of yellow was similar until I started planting gardens of my own. Then, I couldn't avoid daffodils, marigolds, and buttercups! They were so cheerful and it was such a happy color! Yellow has not made it's way into my home, though, until recently. Especially as winter waxes long, I tend to seek out cheer through bright colors --- like yellow. The project at hand is a new valance for the window above the kitchen sink. And the color? Yellow! I think it will bring much cheer to the kitchen each day.

  1. Now I'm smiling. . .after all our similarities. . we've parted ways. . I've always love yellow. . my mom loved yellow. . .and I still look for ways to bring the cheery sunshine color into my home. I do think your print is just lovely and what a perfect way to incorporate it.

  3. Oh, yellow is such an inspiring, cheery color. I painted my last kitchen yellow, delivering it from a very depressing gray blue. I added white lace valences creating a cheery place I loved to be, even on gray winter days. My mother didn't like yellow either, but it has become one of my favorites.

  4. Your valance is beautiful. I'm sure that you are right...it will bring a lot of cheer. I just read somewhere that loving yellow in psychological terms means that one is timid and a coward. Okay, that explains a lot for me! LOL! Does it explain a lot for your mom?

  5. I am not a yellow lover either, however I DO love your new valances. As long as there are plenty of pretty colored roses covering something yellow, I can handle it! I do like yellow flowers in my garden though!

  9. Yellow has become one of my favorite colors late in life....I cannot wear it unfortunately (it clashes with my coloring), but I can paint a wall in the kitchen a lovely deep yellow, and put blue and yellow patterned ceramics on the wall as decor...

Your new valance is very pretty and I like that touch of lace you've addedd.

  10. So many people over the years have avoided yellow. I chose it for my favorite color when all the other little girls were chosing pink. It has remained steadfastly my favorite color. I makes me smile and brings great joy.

  11. It's so funny to read your post this evening. Why? Because we bought paint for our bathroom today and guess what colour it is...yup, yellow!

Like you, I've never been a fan of yellow until the last year or so. I now find it so cheerful and warm. If you had told me a few years ago that I would paint a whole room in my home yellow I would have said no way! I guess you should never say never. :o)

Oh, and love the valance. It would look great in my bathroom! :o)

  12. Yellow is my mom's favorite color, so we were never without something yellow around. I like to tease Mom about yellow being the color of madness. Wicked me. ;-D

  13. I am loving your new "Valance"....it's very pretty.
I am one that likes reds and yellows....together. HA! But I don't have a lot of it in my house...yet I like seeing it say...in yours. HA!
One day maybe. I do have a goldish yellow kitchen, with burdandy, gold and green Waverly Valances. Works for me. HA!

  16. This looks like the same or similar Waverly print I have used as an accent for years. I never tire of it. Yellow always makes me think of my grandfather. It was his favorite color and fit his cheerful personality so well.
