The Playwright

According to the director's notes, Susanna Centlivere (c. 1669 - 1723), one of the most successful playwrights of her time, was one of the few 18th century women whose work continued to be performed well into the 19th century. Whether in London, the provinces, or in America, Australia, Germany or France, at least one of her plays was in performance somewhere for almost to hundred consecutive years. One of her four most popular plays, The Busie-Body (1709), was performed in London over 400 times during her lifetime alone.
