On My Sewing Table

Hearts, hearts, hearts!
Fabric, fabric, fabric!
Texture and color!

On my sewing table today is a quilt I've been working on at a leisurely pace. Little hearts stitched onto different patterned blocks of 'white on white' have been attached with different colors of cotton threads. I'm in the midst of tying it now, a technique that I love because of the emotional response it creates for me. My great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother all preferred tying quilts rather than hand or machine quilting them. The whimsy of the little bunny ears from the cotton threads seemed to belong with the button-stitched hearts, so that's the method I chose for this quilt.

My leisurely pace is sure to continue. I'm nearly done tying and the binding comes next --- but binding a quilt is my least favorite task in the quilt-making process. An inquiry or two about my progress is sure to prod me along!

  2. I adore that quilt! I may "borrow" the idea for a baby quilt. My latest grandchild is due on my husband's birthday in April.

I, too, love the look of tied quilts.

As a lover of fabric, I have been looking at those pictures for a VERY long time, memorizing the fabric each heart is made out of.

How big are the squares which each heart is on (hmmm...are they squares, I forgot what you had written).

  3. How beautiful your quilt is. I am a heart-o-holic and this makes me want to stitch up my own. How could you not finish tying it just so you can sit under it in the cool evenings? Thanks for sharing.

What a pretty quilt indeed. I love the fabic choices you've made...very feminine yet tranquil. It works for February still, but I think lovely hearts can pass in any season :)

  5. What a sweet quilt. I'm fond of tied quilts as well. My mom made many tied quilts for each and every grandchild. Last year my daughter-in-law was struggling through one of her last university assignments and I tied a quilt for her and kept her company at the same time. What you have done there is a labour of love. I also agree with the binding being the least favorite job.

  8. I see your mom in a lot of pictures. I loved seeing her in her craft room.

As for my quilting I find tying a quilt a lot easier than actually "quilting" a quilt. And as for the binding, I totally agree. It's a long, tedious process. I just started working on a quilt probably for my daughter. Not sure when I'll finish it.
