Quilt Vision Board

I love vision boards. I think a beautiful, gold-leafed frame that's hung on the wall with a blank space inside to place pictures and objects that inspire you is just lovely! But I really don't have space on my walls for one. Yesterday I was thinking about the quilt I'm making and wanted to see what it was going to look like when done. I found my wooden drying rack and discovered it made a very helpful "vision board"! Layers of print fabrics and some of the nine-patch squares hung on the wooden dowels gave me a vision of what my completed quilt might look like. And the secret to every good quilt and the coordination of prints, colors, and fabric? Squinting! I always analyze my choices by squinting, just to make sure nothing stands out too much --- or gets buried in the mix. A cuppa tea helps with the analysing process.

Do you quilt? What is your secret to selecting fabrics for your project?

  2. I like the prepackaged quilting kits. I have a terrible time selecting fabrics. I'm no good at it at all. Got any tips?

  5. What a fun way of looking at your quilt in process. Love the fabrics and colors. My last quilt just spread out all over my dining table. Now it is in the mail to the quilter to do the part I don't want to do. I love the visioning and planning and putting the top together.

  6. I'm so glad you are having such a nice time quilting. It seems like it must be refreshing to you, as are all those lovely little violets under the tree. We are enjoying spring very much. There was a huge vase of daffodils and narcissus on the table last night with the evening light setting all aglow. I just love this time of year.

I sometimes tack up a piece of flannel on the wall for as long as it takes for me to decide on colors. I am deciding that contrast is one of the secrets of quilting. I lean towards lovely matching mediums, but I need to remember to put in light and darks around the mediums to set them off and make them shine.
