Lilac Heaven

Twenty-five years ago my mother-in-law gave us starts from the lilacs at her home.  Each start grew in our garden and now we have a long row of beautiful lilacs.  But, after so much time, they are very tall and most of the blossoms bloom at the top!  Clipping them for an arrangement is quite a challenge, but with a long stretch, a few can be gathered for a pretty centerpiece.  Walking under the lilac trees is a fragrant experience, and although most of the blossoms cannot be reached, the walk is worth the experience for its sensory effect on the nostrils!  Lilac season passes by quickly --- so if you have lilacs blooming nearby --- enjoy them while you can!

  2. Those are so lovely, especially with the yellows in the background behind them. (Lilac and yellow are complementary colors, did you know?)

Lilacs don't seem to grow down here in southern VA, and I miss them so much; they were one of the glories of spring in Ohio!

  6. Love, love lilacs! Mine also are so tall I can bearly reach any for a bouquet. Then they don't last long once picked; so I try to go out everyday and just sniff alot and enjoy them where they are.

  7. Love the variety and the color hues...so pretty! I'm always impressed when people can tolerate lilacs indoors. I find the aroma heavenly outside, and something considerably less inside. How many years did it take for the lilacs to grow so tall? More than 25?

  8. Your lilacs are gorgeous! I have an old lilac that has been in my yard since long before we moved in. I want to add more, especially since we went to the most fabulous lilac gardens last Sunday afternoon. I will share those gardens soon. I know you would love to wander through the gardens and smell the flowers and enjoy all of the one hundred and forty types of lilacs! Come on over to see me next Spring and I'll take you there!

If you cut out a few really old limbs from each tree every year or so, you'll soon have more blossoms within easy reach. I finally did it and I am so glad - the bushes have put out lots of new shoots. Lilacs are easily my favorite flowers and you have really lovely colors.
