A Recipe "For the Birds"

It's for the birds! A recipe to keep them happy during the cold days of winter!

In a large pan, melt 1 cup shortening and one cup crunchy peanut butter over medium heat. Then add 2 cups quick cooking oats, 2 cups cornmeal, one cup all purpose flour and 1/4 cup sugar. Smear this mixture into a pinecone and hang it in a tree or spoon it into holes in a small log. Then, get out your binoculars or stand quietly near your window and wait for the action! The birds will love you for it!

  1. I can understand the January blahs. Too many clouds around here. But better, warmer weather will be coming, and then we can go out and look for little bulbs that may come peeking out of the ground. We have two feeders up for the birds now, and binoculars ready, and no birds (at the feeders, that is). We have hawks soaring above the ridge on windy days, magpies coming in for an occasional landing and look around. And then there are flocks of hundreds of starlings flying over headed somewhere. You can hear them coming before you see them sometimes. But where are the finches and the junkos? I'm afraid something has happened to them. I"m sad. But I'm praying for them. We've got food waiting for them when the word gets out.
