The Castle Cairn "Tilting Teapot" has been replicated by the owners of a shop that the owners call by the same name. According to information they share, in 1905 the Scottish Earl of Dundonald invented a "tilting teapot" for the optimum brewing of loose-leaf teas. The good Earl christened it the SYP teapot, which he said stood for "Simple. . .yet perfect".
The teapot is made so that it can stand 'tipped' or in an upright position. A small infusion shelf is about 3/4 of the way to the top. When filled with hot water, the teapot is then laid in the 'tipping' position, steeping the tea leaves on the infusion shelf that acts as a dam, thus preventing the leaves from floating into the majority of the hot water below. After infusing, the teapot is tilted back on it's base and left to drain for a minute or two. It's then ready to pour and enjoy. The tea leaves stay on the infusion tray, ready for second pot? A second infusion can be gained by simply pouring more hot water.

I have a similar teapot. Is that Tuppence? Is here shop still open? When I drove by it earlier this fall there was a for sale sign. Just curious what she is up to.
ReplyDeleteLast I knew Tuppence was closing their shop and were selling only online. But this morning I tried their website and it is closed and I couldn't find an updated link anywhere. That's too bad --- the teapots are really neat. Maybe a reader will know of a similar teapot or if Tuppence is still around.

ReplyDeleteRather ingenious I'd say. Wish that I'd had something in my tea pot because I'm certain that it would've been more satisfying than the glass of soda I had.

ReplyDeleteNo teapot here :( but so far today I've enjoyed a cup each of Irish Breakfast Tea with honey, Pomegranate Pizzazz (Bigelow) & Nutcracker Sweet (Celestial Seasonings). There may still be a cup of Candy Cane Lane (Celestial Seasonings) in my future today & there will definitely be another cup of Nutcracker Sweet (my favorite) to close out the day.

Has their online store ceased too! I loved their Lady Gray tea. It was the best. I also liked their Dreams of Fruit and the one with Kiwi in it. SO sad. I usually buy a bunch when I order. So, it has been a while!
